Inauguration of the academic year

The inauguration ceremony for the 2024/2025 academic year, which will be a year of three anniversaries for the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń, will begin on 1 October at 11:00 in the NCU Main Auditorium Aula. The event will be available to follow on the NCU TV website.

Traditionally, prior to the commencement of the ceremony, on 1 October at 10:15 a.m., members of the NCU Senate - to the sound of the Military Orchestra - will lay flowers at the Nicolaus Copernicus monument in the Old Town Square in Toruń.

At 11:00 the events will move to the NCU Aula. In view of the start of the term of office of the University authorities, the ceremony will open with the handing over of the rector's insignia from the outgoing Rector, Prof. Andrzej Sokala, to the new Rector, Prof. Andrzej Tretyn, who will then deliver an inaugural speech.

The upcoming academic year marks three important anniversaries for the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń: we are celebrating the 40th anniversary of the establishment of the Medical Academy in Bydgoszcz and the 20th anniversary of its merger with the NCU and the establishment of the Collegium Medicum, as well as the 80th anniversary of the University. Therefore, the inauguration of the academic year will also be the opening of a series of celebrations.

An important highlight of the ceremony will be matriculation, the symbolic inclusion of first-year students into the academic community. Also students entering the University Secondary School will join our community, who will take the oath at the inauguration.

The beginning of the academic year will also be an opportunity to present the titles of Best Graduate, Best Student, Best Student-Athlete and Best University Secondary School Student. In addition, a trophy presentation to the winners of the inter-faculty student Olympiad 'Copernicada' is planned for this day.

The ceremony will be marked by keynote speeches and an inaugural lecture entitled. 'Vascular surgeon - plumber of the human body and traffic policeman', which will be delivered by Prof Arkadiusz Jawień, Head of the Department of Vascular Surgery and Angiology at the Faculty of Medicine of the NCU Collegium Medicum.
